baby furniture shopping
We went shopping for baby furniture today at the only baby store in GR not owned by Toys'r'Us because they were allegedly having a one-day-only sale at which furniture was between 30-80% off. I have to tell ya, if that's 30-80% off, this is not going to be an enjoyable buying experience. Don't get me wrong; I don't want to cheap out on furniture my child is going to be in contact with every day for the first several years of his/her life, but on the other hand, I see no reason why a solidly-built crib and dresser/changing table/hutch combo unit should run in the $1200-$2000 range. I mean seriously, is that necessary? This is furniture that's going to have a limited life cycle. I just thought that was ridiculous. Anyway, we've narrowed it down to two sets for the time being (although we haven't gone to Tot to Teen in Kalamazoo yet, which apparently has good stuff). Which one do you like better? This one:

$1200 to $2000 and it's not gold-plated? Very disappointing. You have to remember, all baby things are priced based on the economies of scale. You will buy this furniture, but they figure that when you do, there will be younger kids that will get everything you buy as a hand me down (either within your family or to other friends and family) for which they cannot make a sale. They hate hand me downs. eBay is Napster to the baby goods people. So, rather than prosecuting our baby-gear pirating, they make you fork over your treasure chest matey. Yo ho ho and a bottle of foRUMula.
I'm the wrong person to ask about which set looks better. They both look great and you can trust your tastes. Either your child will love it, or they will add their distaste for the furniture you bought to their list of things they don't think you can do right. Oh yeah, I do note that each of them has a nice platform for furniture diving, which may not mean much to you now, but when the child is old enough to pull out the drawers, use them as stairsteps, and reach the ten meter platform to practice the Triple Lindy, you'll know what I mean.
